Jennifer Mellgren-Blackford, MT (ASCP), CIC
Champion for Safe, Patient & Family-Centered Care

The APIC Montana Chapter 117 is announcing a new opportunity for up to two APIC Montana Chapter
members to receive financial assistance to achieve certification or recertification in infection prevention
and control (CIC).
The Jennifer Mellgren-Blackford Honorarium recognizes the commitment and contributions made by the
late Jennifer Mellgren-Blackford, BS, MT (ASCP), CIC, to the field of Infection Prevention and Control.
Jennifer graduated from Montana State University, Bozeman, with a Bachelor of Science degree in
microbiology and chemistry in 1972. She began her professional career as a Medical Technologist in the
field of microbiology in Missoula, Montana and after four years, moved to Billings, Montana where she
worked at Saint Vincent Healthcare from 1976 to 2004. During her twenty-eight years at Saint Vincent
Healthcare, Jennifer worked as a Medical Technologist in the microbiology lab, served as the
Environmental Safety Officer, and as an infection preventionist. In 2004, Jennifer joined the Billings
Clinic in Billings, Montana, where she served as an infection preventionist until March 2013.
Jennifer believed in the professional responsibility of being a life-long learner and was an ardent
supporter and advocate of CIC certification. She was a member of National APIC and an active member
of APIC Montana and served as chapter president in 2005.
She was known as a champion for safe, patient & family-centered care, and professional accountability.
Her colleagues remember her as a caring and compassionate professional, always interested in others,
and who was passionate about hand hygiene, patient safety, and infection control. She was not afraid of
speaking up when she identified an opportunity to improve care for patients and their families.
Jennifer was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She taught us to love,
laugh, and modeled integrity and friendship. She loved golfing, skiing, and watching her favorite team,
Duke, play basketball. She also had a passion for cooking and spending time with her family and friends;
always showing them her love and compassion.
The Jennifer Mellgren-Blackford Honorarium is an annual award available to infection preventionists
who are members of national APIC and APIC Montana, and who are seeking to achieve certification or
recertification in infection prevention and control by the Certification Board of Infection Control and
Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC).
